The New Webelos Den Leader

WHO - An adult (21 or older) who has been selected to lead a Webelos den, with the help of an assistant Webelos leader and sometimes a den chief. The den leader is usually the parent of a Webelos Scout.

WHAT - A Webelos den consists of six to eight boys in the fourth and fifth grades (or who are 10 years old) who meet weekly with their leaders for activities based on one or more Webelos activity badges. The den is part of a pack

WHEN - Den meetings last about one hour and are held each week at a time convenient for all the den members and leaders.

WHERE - At a location chosen by the den leader. Since the group is small, meetings are often held in the den leader's home, but they can be held in a school, library, or other public facility.

WHY - Webelos den meetings build boys into a group whose members have fun while learning new skills. They receive recognition for earning Webelos activity badges and advance in rank by earning their Webelos badge and finally the Arrow of Light, the highest award in Cub Scouting.

HOW - Planning a den meeting is easy with the aid of The Webelos Leader Guide and other resources. The Webelos Leader Guide contains a suggested sequence of activity badges for each month. The den leader and assistant use the Webelos Den Meeting Program form to plan each meeting. Webelos leaders can share activity badge ideas at the monthly pack leaders' meeting.

Webelos Outdoor Program

Webelos dens are encouraged to conduct several overnight camping experiences with parents. These campouts help build a strong relationship between the boy, the parent, and the den.

Day camp, resident camp, and other outdoor activities may be conducted for Webelos Scouts and their parents by local councils.
