Pack 105’s Rocket Launch
Sunday, May 18th, 2008
St. Raphael’s School Field
7:45am to 10:00am
Rocket Distribution
- All Cub Scouts will receive one rocket assembly kit at April 17th Pack Meeting, to be constructed prior to the launch date.
- On the day of the launch, the Cubs will receive two engines (one at a time).
- If the scout wishes to launch more than 2 rockets, extra engines will be available for purchase for $1.00 each.
- Any sibling who would like to build a rocket can purchase a rocket for $3.00 each and engines for $1.00. The siblings can launch their rockets after all the Cub Scouts have launched their two engines.
- If you’d like to purchase an extra rocket, please contact Alex or Monica Broumand at 681-1927 or they will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis the day of the launch.
Launch Information
- Check-In begins at 7:45am and ends at 8:00am. Signed safety rule forms will be collected, and the first engine will be given to the Scout.
- Rules and the how-to’s of prepping and setting the engine will be reviewed promptly at 8:00am. Please be on time, so that when the 7:30 Mass gets out at 8:30am, we can start launching rockets.
- PLEASE NOTE: Only the rockets that are passed out to the Scouts will be allowed to be launched. Please do not bring any other rockets to the launch. We will not be able to accommodate them as we are only permitted to use the rocket size that were given to the Scouts.
- Since we are launching on a Sunday, parishioners will be arriving and leaving during the
launch. Please be aware of cars and traffic, and be safe when going through the parking lot.
- Please be in full uniform as we want to present ourselves to the general public with pride and
respect.
- The soccer net is for stopping soccer balls, NOT for climbing. If we see a Cub Scout climbing,
you may lose your chance to launch your rocket.
- Please be respectful of the field. St. Raphael’s Church (Father Bruce) has generously allowed us
to use the field for our launch. We want to be able to come back next year, so let’s do our part
and respect the field and its surroundings by cleaning up if you see something out of place.
Please volunteer to help clean up after the launch or if you’d like to help with the set-up,
please let Alex or Monica know at 681-1927.
PARENTS: In order to provide a SAFE activity for our Scouts. Please review the following Rocket Safety Rules before the launch on Sunday, May 18th. To ensure complete understanding, please review these rules with your Cub Scout, sign, date, and then bring this form with you to the launch. These forms will be requested and collected at the check-in table. Engines cannot be distributed without this completed form.
Thank You.
Rocket Safety Rules
Cub Scouts should understand these basic safety rules before attempting a launch.
- Misfires:
If my rocket does not launch when I press the button of my electrical launch system, I will remove the launcher’s safety interlock, and will wait 60 seconds after the last launch attempt before allowing anyone to approach the rocket. Should my rocket misfire, I will wait for the engine to spend itself, then respond with fire suppression equipment, myself.
- Launch Safety:
I will use a countdown before launch, and will ensure that everyone is paying attention and is a safe distance of at least 25 feet away when I launch rockets. I will check the condition of my rocket before flight and will fly it only after warning spectators and clearing them away to a safe distance.
- Launcher:
I will launch my rocket from a launch pad that is pointed vertical to ensure that the rocket flies nearly straight up, and I will use a blast deflector to prevent the motor’s exhaust from hitting the ground. To prevent accidental eye injury, I will place the cap of the key at the end of the rod when it is not in use.
- Flight Safety:
I will not launch my rocket at targets, into clouds, or near airplanes, and will not put any flammable or explosive payload in my rocket.
- Recovery Safety:
I will not attempt to recover my rocket from power lines, tall trees, or other dangerous places. When retrieving my rocket, I will go around the perimeter of the launch areas – NOT through the launch area.
